Ten Questions with The Old Silver Band:
How do you know each other?
John: (Haha) Well, we've known each other for all twenty something years of our lives. We're brothers.
Where did you grow up?
Matt: We grew up in a small town in Massachusetts called Norfolk and spent every summer on good ole Cape Cod where we live now.
At what point did you start playing together?
John: Matt and I originally played in separate bands. In college, Matt was in a folk duo called Broken Birch while in high school I played in a ska band called Rug Scandal. When I moved out west to go to CU Bolder I began playing solo acoustic until Matt moved out and there and we started messing around together. Than we played an open mic in Woods Hole on the Cape and people really flipped out. It was after that we thought maybe we should keep doing this.
How would you describe the OSB sound?
John: Beachgrass. It's a mix of bluegrass, rock, pop, and reggae.
Where did the bluegrass influences come from?
Matt: While living in Colorado, we found ourselves immersed in the huge bluegrass scene. We learned traditional bluegrass first hand from bands like Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band by playing with them at open pics. We then found ourselves incorporating some of the licks and changes from traditional bluegrass into the songs that we already had forming. we're not your grandfathers bluegrass.
What's different about playing as a duo vs. a whole band?
Matt: Aside from being only two people, you lack that rhythm section that so many full bands have with drums and bass. But I think of that as a benefit really. It allows us to do more with the audience then just overpower them with noise. We really push the entertainment part of the show making sure the audience is involved with what we're doing on stage.
How would you describe an OSB live show?
Our friend Frank said it best, "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want a hug, and need a shower."
What’s up with the debut EP?
Matt: We recorded the EP with our good friend Daniel Byrnes in his
home studio. We wrote and produced everything ourselves. It’s a five song self
titled EP that we wanted to put out to support our touring efforts and spread
the word on the band. Its available through our myspace page, iTunes,
Awarestore.com, and through our website. We’ve sold a few hundred copies in
just a few months without any traditional retail.
What are you doing to promote your album and the band itself?
John
: Most of the promotion we’ve done through the internet. Sites like Myspace,
Purevolume, and theoldsilverband.com have helped tremendously. However, we
still feel that word of mouth is the most important way for people to find out
about us. We’re putting together a street team as we speak that will hopefully
help with this. We’ve also gotten a lot of support from WMVY on Martha’s
Vineyard that has played our music on the radio.
What’s next for the Old Silver Band?
John: Our plan is to continue developing our
fan base throughout New England by continuing to tour and sell our EP. We’re
also going to continue developing the band’s presence online with video,
e-cards, Myspace, YouTube, etc. and are in the process of getting more merch.
Most importantly we just want to keep delivering a fun, high energy, hilarious
show and keep people entertained!!
